Luke 1977, an independently owned design focused UK men’s designer label has a tight distribution policy and therefore is only available from a prestigious stores. Luke 1977 is known for its edgy, detailed and practical contemporary menswear.
History:Luke Roper (co-founder of Luke 1977) was born in Walsall, and was the son of a talented wedding dressmaker. At the age of twelve Luke was already adept at using a sewing machine, and Luke soon became interested in the whole process behind producing garments. At fifteen Luke was making shirts for his friends. After leaving school Luke enrolled in a fashion and textiles course at his local Walsall College, which led in 1997 to a place at Central Saint Martin’s College of Fashion in London where Luke began a 3-year specialist menswear design degree. During the 3 years that he was doing his degree he got more involved in traditional tailoring techniques which inspired him to begin making suits. Having continued making clothes for his friends, there was now a real following for Lukes creations from a variety of people. After his graduation Luke took the position of junior designer with a major brand. The idea was that Luke would develop his skills and have a deeper understanding of the clothing industry. In May 2001, after only 6 months he joined forces with his best friends Simon & Deborah Poole and the ‘Luke 1977’ label was created.
