Maharishi was founded by Hardy Blechman in 1994. The literal Sanskrit translation of maharishi is “Great Seer”.
A major influence and driving force behind the brand and their garments is a great environmental vision within fashion, founded on a collection of hemp and natural fibres, and expanding into recycling of military and work wear surplus, with a quality and style which is timeless.
Utilitarian military surplus garments were sourced globally and adapted for fashion. The clothes were reborn; symbolising reincarnation and representing the potential birth of positive from negative. Hardy Blechman`s experience in military sourcing led to his understanding of the great variation of camouflage patterns available and eventually to the research and publication of DPM: Disruptive Pattern Material An Encyclopaedia of Camouflage in Nature, Military and Culture in 2004.

Original Snopants® designed by Hardy Blechman first launched in 1996, which later became maharishi`s signature style and heavily influential on many designers and high street labels. The Dragon Embroidery first appeared on Snopants® a year later in 1997 and showed the first use of such techniques within designer sport / street wear, combining the utilitarian design of the Snopants® with intricate surface hand machined embroidery. Embroidery remains a strong feature of maharishi collections today.
In recognition of the quality of his unique collections Hardy Blechman was awarded ``Streetwear Designer of the Year`` by the British Fashion Council in 2000.
Maharishi opened up a high-concept flagship store opened in 2001 in Covent Garden, London. Designed by architect Francois Scali, the space achieved a combination of nature and technology. In 2004 Scali remodelled a larger head quarters for maharishi at 2-3 Great Pulteney Street, Soho, London and the original store eventually moved there.
In addition to clothing collections, the store offers reference and art books alongside rare Japanese toys and Samurai armour, as well as presenting gallery exhibitions for maharishi collaborators and guest artists. The first show in 2001 showed photographs by Henry Chalfant, legendary graffiti archivist and author of Subway Art, Spraycan Art and the documentary Style Wars. Subsequent exhibitions have included Futura 2000, WK Interact, Neckface, Jay One and Alist.
