The history of Levis dates back to 1853, with the gold rush in full swing everyday items were in short supply. Levi Strauss, a 24-year-old German immigrant, left New York for San Francisco with a small supply of dry goods with the intention of opening a branch of his brother's New York dry goods business carrying canvas for tents and wagon covers.
Shortly after inspiration struck and Levi Strauss had the canvas made into waist overalls. The gold miners liked the pants, but complained that they tended to chafe. Levi Strauss then brought in a twilled cotton cloth from France called "serge de Nimes." The fabric later became known as denim.
In 1873, Levi Strauss & Company began using the pocket stitch design. Levi Strauss and tailor David Jacobs co-patented the process of putting rivets in jeans for increased strength. On May 20, 1873, they received U.S.Patent No.139,121. This date is now considered the official birthday of "blue jeans."

The two-horse brand design was first used in 1886. The red tab attached to the left rear pocket was created in 1936 as a means of identifying Levi’s jeans at a distance. All are registered trademarks that are still in use.
In 1996 Levi’s® Vintage Clothing was born to celebrate this rich history. Levis® Vintage Clothing is a line of authentic reproductions of clothing from the Levi Strauss & Co. Archives. The Levis® Vintage range draws upon the company's denim and clothing heritage taking styles, dyes and unique cuts from past eras giving each a modern tweak thus re-inventing timeless classics. Levis® Vintage 1954 501's have a classic dark wash these selvedge jeans recreate the style of the 50's. The Levis® Vintage 1947 501's are different in appearance but with identical high quality. They feature hand-made abrasions and details with an authentic vintage wash.
The collection also includes faithful reproducitons of classic T-shirts and shirts, with styles such as the 1920's inspired Ocean Button Tee, featuring a low cut henley neck with button detail. The 1930's esque Bay Meadow Tee is simpler with a solid pastel colour and wide crew neck. Also appearing in this classic collection are modern re-workings of classic workwear jackets, given that contemporary twist to make them timeless.
