Comme des Garcons PLAY Tops
Comme des Garçons, French for "like boys", is a Japanese fashion label headed by Rei Kawakubo who runs the company with her husband Adrian Joffe. Comme des Garçons has a dozen boutiques and around 200 vendors across the globe, with flagship stores in Aoyama, Tokyo's high fashion district, as well as Place Vendôme in Paris. Each of their collections is shown in this city during Paris Fashion Week and at Paris Men’s Fashion Week with the brand showcasing its unique style.
The label was started in Tokyo by Rei Kawakubo in 1969 and established as a company in Japan in 1973. The menswear line of Comme des Garçons was added in 1978. Comme des Garçons has consistently been at the forefront of innovation and has never shirked from breaking the mould. The brand made its debut Paris show in 1981 causing an instant reaction with the lines use of distressed fabrics and predominantly black colour palette.

Comme des Garçons opened the first of their 'Guerrilla' stores in 2004 in Berlin. The Guerrilla stores' aim is to be open for only one year and to spend a minimal amount of money on the interiors. Comme des Garçons Guerrilla stores have been opened (and subsequently closed) in Reykjavik, Warsaw, Helsinki, Singapore and Athens, amongst others. In July 2007, a Guerrilla Store opened in the Achrafieh district of Beirut, Lebanon, and then in February 2008, they opened one in downtown Los Angeles, the first in the United States. In November 2008, they opened another Guerrilla store in the west end of Glasgow.
2004 saw the opening in London of Dover Street Market, a multilevel store conceptualised by Rei Kawakubo. As well as selling Comme Des Garçons lines, other designers are personally invited and given their own ‘creative spaces’ by Kawakubo to open a section of the store and design it in any way they wish while often selling limited edition pieces made exclusively for the store.
Comme des Garçons have successfully collaborated with a range of labels over the years including Fred Perry, Levi's, Converse All Star, Speedo, Nike, Lacoste, Levi's, Converse All Star , Cutler and Gross, Chrome Hearts and Louis Vuitton among others.
The year 2005 saw an exhibition in Shinjuku, Tokyo of Comme Des Garçons advertising and graphic designs. These graphic style prints can be seen in the new addition to the Comme des Garçons range PLAY Comme des Garçons. A range specifically aimed at younger men's and women's casual street wear with bug-eyed heart logo prints at the forefront of the styles which is a design from New York graphic artist Filip Pagowski.
For their Spring/Summer 2011 collection Comme des Garçons have taken early work by The Simpsons creator Matt Groening as their inspiration for a limited edition line. Based around characters Binky and Sheba, the range includes the Play Comme des Garçons heart logo over unmistakable Groeningesque cartoon graphic prints.
A number of celebrities have been known to wear Comme des Garçons including Matt Bellamy, Kanye West, Usher and Alexander McQueen.
